OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY: ERGONOMICS

ERGONOMICS PROGRAM

The purpose of the Ergonomics Program at UCSF is to promote employee health and safety by decreasing workplace exposure to ergonomic risk factors. The campus ergonomist works with a team of Department Safety Advisors (DSA) to address all ergonomics needs on campus.

Roles and Responsibilities

Every employee plays an important role in safety and health in the work place. Familiarize yourself with your responsibilities and how others can support your efforts to stay healthy and work safely.

Faculty and Staff
  • Complete the recommended training modules and self evaluations.
  • Familiarize yourself with the risks associated with your job.
  • Modify your work environment to best suit your needs.
  • Implement recommended practices.
  • Consult with your supervisor or Department Safety Advisor (DSA) for assistance.
Managers and Supervisors
  • Make sure that all employees complete the recommended ergonomics training modules pertaining to their work duties.
  • Assist your employees with ergonomics self evaluations and workstation set ups.
  • Order recommended equipment to create a safer environment.
  • Act as a role model and motivate your employees to work safely in a safer work environment.
Department Safety Advisor (DSA)
  • Conduct preventative ergonomics evaluations if needed following the employee's completion of ergonomic self evaluation.
  • Provide group ergonomics training as needed.
  • Assist with product selection.
Campus Ergonomist
  • Carry out program development and organization.
  • Provide in depth ergonomics evaluation for individuals with prior injuries, medical needs or, other special needs.
  • Conduct group trainings.
  • Provide ergonomics design guidelines for new buildings and renovated spaces.
  • Provide task analysis and consultation for all campus ergonomics requirements.

Ergonomic Assistance

Individual evaluation

If you require assistance with your office set up, product selection or general comfort, the first step is to complete the online Office Ergonomics Training and self evaluation.After completion of your self evaluation, if you still require assistance, please contact your Department Safety Advisor (DSA)

Group training

Classroom type training is available for groups of 20 or more as a supplement to the online training. Please contact your DSA or campus ergonomist to schedule a training session.

Product Selection

Your Department Safety Advisor (DSA) is available to assist you with product selection. The Ergo Labs can be visited by appointment only to try the different equipment on our Preferred Product List.

Design

When there is interaction between the human and the environment, it is never too early to involve the Ergonomist in your new plan and projects. Whether building a new campus or renovating a space, the ergonomist is available for design consultation in order to make a building as ergonomically optimal as possible from the start. Ergonomic design guidelines are under development and will be available soon.

Other needs
The ergonomist is available for consultation for any of your ergonomics needs e.g. task analysis and space organization to minimize the physical demands on the worker, equipment consultation, etc.

Ergonomics Equipment Lab

The ergonomics equipment labs contain equipment from our Preferred Product List. After completing your Office Ergonomics Training and Self Evaluation, you may visit the Ergo Lab for assistance with product selection prior to purchasing. 

The Ergo Lab is available by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please contact your Department Safety Advisor (DSA) or the campus ergonomist.

Mount Zion Campus

The Ergo Lab is located in room A-018D. 

As you enter UCSF/Mt-Zion Medical Center via the1600 Divisadero entrance, go to the right towards the cafeteria. The Ergo Lab is at the basement level by the cafeteria and off the dining hall. The Ergo Lab is the first door on the right if you go through the cafeteria into the dining hall.

Mission Bay Campus

An ergonomics lab will soon be available at the Mission Bay campus, at Byer’s Hall (QB-3), room BH-116. Our projected opening date is early 2008.
