OEH&S Chemical Safety Manual Chapter 6
TRAINING
A. REQUIREMENTS
The Hazard Communication Standard requires that employees be provided
with training and information on hazards relating to their jobs when they
are
hired or assigned to a job involving hazardous materials. Additional
training must
be provided when the employee is exposed to new hazards in the
workplace.
It should be noted that this training requirement applies to all employees regardless
of the type of hazards they are exposed to. In addition periodic
retraining must be provided to insure employees competency in safety.
NOTES:
- The basic responsibility for employee training is with the supervisors.
- UCSF OEH&S provides a mandatory initial laboratory safety training on
Tuesday and Wednesday of each week (12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m.). To register
please contact 476-1300.
- In addition OEH&S provides biennial retraining programs which cover
relevant safety areas.
B. TOPICS
The specifics of training programs vary depending on the hazards encountered
on the job. However, at the minimum all employees need to be provided
with the following basic training requirements:
1. GENERAL
- Basic laws pertaining to safety (e.g. Hazard Communication, Injury
and Illness Prevention)
- Structure of safety at UCSF
- Who to contact in an emergency
- How to deal with basic emergencies such as fire, chemical spills,
etc.
- Departmental Emergency Action Plans

2. LABORATORY WORKERS
- Chemical Hygiene Plan (knowledge of the UCSF Plan)
- Basic laboratory safety
- Personal protective equipment
- Labeling
- Use of fume hoods, emergency deluge showers and eyewash fountains
- Safety requirements of compressed gases
- Safe handling of cryogenics
- Chemical storage compatibility

OEH&S frequently provides training
materials to the laboratories in the form of newsletters
and flyers. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator/Laboratory
Manager to
assure that all workers in the laboratory read, understand,
and comply with those materials.
