THE OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

DELUGE SHOWER AND EYEWASH STATION MONITORING

California Safety regulations require that an emergency shower and eyewash be provided at all work areas where during routine operations and foreseeable emergencies, any area of the employee’s body may come in contact with hazardous materials.

Emergency eyewash facilities and showers must be located so that they are accessible in 10 seconds or less to an injured person. Eyewashes and showers must also be co-located so that they can be used simultaneously.

The emergency eyewashes and showers must deliver potable water at a specified rate and for a specified time duration. The area in which the shower and eyewash is located must remain unobstructed of any objects or materials that impede access in an emergency.

Environmental Health and Safety tests and certifies all safety deluge showers and eyewashes which meet the safety standards outlined above. Please note this does not include Drench Hoses located on laboratory sinks; these do not meet the criteria for emergency eyewashes. On a monthly basis, OEH&S flushes all showers and eyewashes to ensure proper operation. On an annual basis, OEH&S tests each eyewash and shower to verify proper flow rates and durations.

All eyewashes and showers are equipped with a tag listing date of flushing and the technician’s initials. If you have a safety shower or eyewash which is not being flushed and tested regularly, please notify your Department Safety Advisor.

If there is no eyewash or shower meeting the regulatory requirements, please contact your building manager.
