Summary

OEH&S conducts training classes for the Campus Community on a regular basis. The classes meet the regulatory requirements levied by OSHA and the California Department of Health Services. These cover general health and safety issues, and do not replace requirements for supervisors to train or make certain employees are trained in the specific hazards of their workplace. The classes are described below.

OEH&S can also provide specialized training modules. Examples we've recently developed include Basic Laboratory Safety for laboratory technicians and dishwashers, Safety for Facilities Management (Crafts, Custodial, Grounds, and Office Personnel), Bloodborne Pathogens Training for employees of the Dental School. Often, we add the "specialized training" module to the regular training schedule, once the module has been given, and its general usefulness demonstrated.

We can also provide assistance to supervisors, laboratory managers, and others who have responsibility for training employees in workplace hazards. For further information, contact your DSA or the OEH&S Training Coordinator.

Safety Training For Campus Personnel

The Hazard Communication Standard, Radioactive Materials License, and Bloodborne Pathogen Standard require that employees be provided with initial training and information on hazards relating to their jobs when they are hired or assigned to a job involving these hazardous materials. Additional training must be provided when the employee is exposed to new hazards in the workplace.

In addition, periodic annual safety retraining must be provided to insure employee's competency in safety.

The basic responsibility for employee training is with the Supervisors. OEH&S can assist in providing training materials for meeting the legal requirements.

Laboratory Safety For Researchers - Online

This class introduces chemical safety, biosafety, Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), ISEMs, fire safety, and emergency procedures. It fulfills Cal-OSHA training requirements for Hazard Communication and IIPP.

It is required for all campus laboratory research personnel and graduate students to complete all safety training at the time of their initial assignment. Training for lab-specific hazards, and whenever a new hazard is introduced, is the responsibility of the supervisor.

Note: Additional training may be required based on job assignment including radiation safety, bloodborne pathogens, etc. For questions, please contact your Department Safety Advisor.

Please go to Research Online to register. It may take a few days for you to receive your username.

Documentation:
Users must submit a Universal Hazardous Materials Use Form (Training Experience Verification) to your DSA to add your name to PI authorizations.

Controlled substance users also need to submit an Information on User of Controlled Substances Form.

Radiation Safety - Online

This class is basic radiation safety as mandated by Title 17 and it is required for all users of radioactive material or radioactive devices such as x ray machines. Completion of the course and passing the test is required prior to employee’s name being added to a Radioactive Materials Use Authorization.

*Completion of Laboratory Safety for Researches is required prior to taking this class. Research Online

Controlled Substances - Online

This class describes procedures for users who will be working with DEA regulated material. Completion of the course and passing the test is required prior to the employee’s name being added to a Controlled Substance Use Authorization.

*Completion of Laboratory Safety for Researches is required prior to taking this class. Research Online

Laboratory Safety for Researchers - Refresher

This class is required by regulatory agencies to ensure laboratory staff is currently trained in mandated laboratory related environmental, health and safety topics. It is required every two years after completion of the Lab Safety for Researchers course. The class includes a discussion of hazardous materials, chemical hazards , general safety, radiation safety, etc. If you would like to take this course online now, please click on this link for Research Online.

Introduction to Laboratory Safety for Laboratory Assistants and Dishwashers

This class introduces non-technical laboratory employees to laboratory safety. It focuses on recognition of standard hazards in the laboratory and emphasizes understanding of procedures and hazards before undertaking a task. The class is offered monthly, or by special request. Please contact the OEH&S Training Coordinator @ 502-8278.

Office Ergonomics Training and Self Evaluation

This class introduces computer users to the UCSF ergonomics program and helps users to assess their own work stations and work practices. Topics include: roles and responsibilities in the ergonomics program, common signs and symptoms of computer-related injuries, ergonomic risk factors, modifying work practices and work station to reduce risk of injuries and improve comfort, access to resources including preferred product lists, and who to contact for further information. Bloodborne Pathogens Training (initial and refresher) - online

This class presents the requirements of the California Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, including the nature and epidemiology of bloodborne pathogens, and the methods of protecting against exposure. It is required for all employees working with potential exposure to:

  • Human blood (whole, components, products)
  • Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM)
  • Human cell lines
  • Human and animal tissue that may contain human blood or OPIM

Bloodborne Pathogens Training* is available through Research Online.

PLEASE NOTE: This training must be renewed annually.

*Completion of Laboratory Safety for Researchers is required prior to taking this class.

Hazardous Waste Management

The purpose of this short course is to train UCSF personnel in basic hazardous waste management practices. UCSF policy mandates that all laboratory staff attend the basic orientation training for laboratory workers provided by OEH&S (call 476-1300 for information); if you handle hazardous waste, you must take this course, either in person or online. For details, refer to UCSF policy item # 550: Health and Safety, then follow link to # 550-15: Environmental Health and Safety Training. HAZMAT For First Receivers

OSHA requires hospitals to provide a minimum of 8 hours of training to staff who are expected to decontaminate victims or handle victims before they are thoroughly decontaminated. Clinicians and non-clinicians from both Medical Center and campus are eligible to take this training. By participating in this training, staff understand that in the event of a major emergency, they may be contacted to provide clinical or other support services, within the scope of their license, skills, and abilities, to UCSF Medical Center patients and/or to emergency recovery activities of UCSF. Preregistration is required and may be done by through online registration.

Safe Shipping of Biohazards - online

Biohazardous materials are constantly being transported both among UCSF campuses and between UCSF and facilities throughout the world. The process of shipping these materials is highly regulated. Non-compliance can lead to refusal to accept shipments, fines and other punitive actions.

If you or others in your laboratory are responsible for the transport or movement of biological or biohazardous materials, at least one person from your lab must be trained in the Safe Shipping of Biohazards.

Safe Shipping of Biohazards* is available through Research Online.
The training will cover local, state, federal, and international regulations regarding documentation and shipping containers.

PLEASE NOTE: This training must be renewed every 2 years.

*Completion of Laboratory Safety for Researchers is required prior to taking this class.
